Prambanan Temple


Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, a height of 47 meters, was built in the 9th century. This temple is located on the island of Java, about 20 km east of Yogyakarta, 40 km west of Surakarta and 120 km south of Semarang, just on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta Special Region, whose territory is divided between the districts of Sleman and Klaten.

Prambanan temple has three main temples in the primary yard, namely Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiva. The three temples are symbols of Trimurti in Hindu belief. All of them face east. Each main temple has accompanying temple facing to the west, namely Nandini for Shiva, Swan to Brahma, and Garuda for Vishnu. In addition, there are 2 temples wedge, 4 temples color and 4 corner temples. In both there are 224 temples.

The main temple of Shiva Temple (center), Brahma Temple (south), Vishnu Temple (north). This temple is located in front of the Wahana (vehicle) as a vehicle Trimurti. Angkasa temple is the vehicle of Brahma (God of Guardians), Candi Nandi (Ox) is the vehicle of Shiva (Destroyer Gods) and the Temple of Garuda is the vehicle of Vishnu (the god creator).

On the fence wall ledge Shiva temple and Brahma temple carved reliefs of the Ramayana story, while at the fence of the temple steps Krisnayana Vishnu carved reliefs. Shiva temple entrance from the east turn left you will find reliefs of the Ramayana story in a clockwise direction, and continued at the Brahma temple.

Entering Main Temple (Temple of Shiva) from the north, tourists can see the statue of a beautiful princess named Roro Jonggrang. Loro Jonggrang, or more precisely spelled as Rara / Lara Jonggrang or so-called Durga Mahisasuramardini is a legend or folklore. This legend tells of a man named Bandung Bondowoso loved Roro Jonggrang. But Rara Jonggrang not love him, then asked Bondowoso Jonggrang make 1000 temples with statues in one night. The request was nearly fulfilled, but Jonggrang asked the villagers to pound rice and make a big fire that created an atmosphere like the morning. Bondowoso who only completed 999 statues cursed Jonggrang be a statue of 1000 because he felt cheated. Then the Prambanan Temple, also known as Rara Jonggrang.
